Hive Tyrant
A major synapse commander and combat monster.
Threat File — Hive Tyrant
TR 15 · TyranidsSaves: Toughness +12, Willpower +13
Proficiencies: Awareness +9, Command +10
Senses: Sees normally in total darkness, Feels every organism in its synapse web
Synaptic Sovereign. Every tyranid in the encounter checks no Morale and fights with coordinated intelligence while the tyrant lives. Its death drops the entire swarm to instinct at once — broods scattering, ferals fleeing, the field suddenly quiet.
Shadow in the Warp. Enemy psykers within 60 feet make psychic actions at Disadvantage and risk Perils on any failure. The hive mind's attention has weight.
Guarded Investment. The tyrant is escorted by tyrant guard who intercept hits meant for it (see Tyrant Guard). The hive does not spend generals cheaply.
Bonesword and Lashwhip. The tyrant makes two attacks. Melee Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 2d10 + 8 rending damage. A target hit by both attacks makes a Toughness Save DC 17 or is Bleeding and attacks at Disadvantage until treated.
Heavy Venom Cannon. Ranged Attack: +10 to hit, range 100/300 ft., one target. Hit: 3d10 + 5 toxic damage. Light Cover grants no Defense bonus against this attack. The tyrant does not stop commanding to shoot.
Psychic Scream. Each creature within 30 feet makes a Willpower Save DC 17, taking 4d8 psychic damage on a failure or half on a success. A creature that fails is left reeling and makes its next attack at Disadvantage.
The Swarm Answers. Once per round, when an enemy completes an action, one brood within the tyrant's synapse immediately moves up to half its Movement or makes one attack.
Morale: Does not make Morale checks. If the engagement fails it withdraws under guard, spending the swarm to cover its retreat — the hive mind preserves its investment.
Tactics: Structure this as a decapitation mission. The tyrant fights behind waves and guards, reading the party's tactics and answering them — waves timed to reloads, flanks aimed at the medic — and uses its command reaction every round so they feel its intelligence before its claws. Killing it should visibly lobotomize the encounter.
Loot / Evidence / Hooks: Its skull-ganglion is the biologis prize of a generation, and proof of the kill breaks swarm coordination reports across the whole war zone.
Enemy Dossier
GM ReferenceThe hive tyrant is the hive mind wearing a body: a monster-general whose synapse web binds the entire swarm and whose personal capability embarrasses everything the party has fought to reach it. It is simultaneously the encounter's brain, its heaviest weapon, and its objective.
Use this threat as the command climax of a tyranid arc — a boss whose death decapitates the swarm across the whole engagement zone.
Threat Profile: Boss-grade durability, elite melee and bio-weapon output, army-wide synapse command, psychic assault, tyrant guard escort, objective-level target.
Synaptic Sovereign. Every tyranid in the encounter checks no Morale and fights with coordinated intelligence while the tyrant lives; its death drops the swarm to instinct at once.
Shadow in the Warp. Enemy psykers within its presence cast at Disadvantage and risk Perils; the hive mind's attention has weight.
Guarded Investment. Escorted by tyrant guard who intercept hits; the hive does not spend generals cheaply.
Alien General. It reads the party's tactics and answers them: waves timed to reloads, flanks aimed at the medic, retreats that are repositioning.
Bonesword and Lashwhip. Elite paired melee; targets hit save against wound-level penalties on top of the damage.
Heavy Venom Cannon. Long-range bio-artillery fired while directing the swarm; it does not stop commanding to shoot.
Psychic Scream. Area psychic assault; failed Willpower Saves take damage and are left reeling.
The Swarm Answers. Once per round, an entire brood moves or attacks as a reaction to the party's action.
Morale: No Morale; if the engagement fails it withdraws under guard to spend the swarm covering its retreat — the hive mind preserves its investment.
Tactics: Encounter note: structure this as a decapitation mission. The tyrant fights behind waves and guards, using its command action every round so the party feels its intelligence before its claws; killing it early should be nearly impossible, and killing it at all should visibly lobotomize the encounter — broods scattering, ferals fleeing, the field suddenly quiet. Objective framing works: kill it before the third wave, before the breach, before the shadow cuts astropathic contact for good.
